The Fall to be given to Sub Division only? Comment in Hong Kong publication + NME news item (update_

meredith_yang sends in some news from a recently-published interview with Damon and Jamie in Hong Kong: "Well, from what I've recently read of the interview they [Damon and Jamie] did in Hong Kong (written in Chinese), it is noted that the iPad album will be free to download for fanclub members only. So I'm kinda bewildered why it's never clarified in any English interviews. Either way I guess some people are gonna feel cheated on Christmas Day..."

Damon and Jamie have not referred to the fanclub when talking about the ipad/tour album on the Australia (now officially titled 'The Fall') leading much of the world's media to conclude that The Fall will be free to all on Christmas Day. However, in addition to this report from Hong Kong, Gorillaz.com states in at least three places that Sub Division members will receive a much superior gift on Christmas day compared to what non-members will get.

UPDATE: 18/12/10 13:30:- Droid points out that an NME news item on their site here that the album will be for download to fanclub members only. Further anonymous people in the comments note that The Independent here and Spinner here claim it will be fanclub only.

If this is confirmed, we could still hope that the album will be available on ITunes or CD.

i think that fanclub members can download that album for free,normal fans have to buy it.

You'd think they'd have been clear if they intended it to be subdiv only right? right? Or there WILL be a great deal of discontent amongst fans.

I don't think ANY discontent is justified. I'm not a SD member, and if they give it away free to just SD, I will understand. I hope they give us other folk the chance to buy it for a few quid though. I'm just happy there's a whole new album coming in a few days!

Well people will feel lied to, mislead... which tends to foster a great deal of resentment.

I wouldn't mind paying for the album, but in the end, if D&J weren't clear and were misquoted, well, people will still be pissed off.
Sure the band owes us nothing, but at the same time, never underestimate the power of bad publicity.

But we'll reserve judgement till the 25th, and the real truth of the matter comes to light.

I say Good.
I'm tired of SubDivision getting hosed. i payed my money, and so far I've got nothing to separate myself from paying fan to smart/cheap fan.
Especially the fanclub vip tickets fiasco.
So pay to be in the club, or don't... but know that G-clubbers deserve special treatment.

Yeah, I think sub-division members do deserve a bit less chaos. I don't think they necessarily need more stuff, maybe just more recognition for having supported the band or something. Or an extended membership. >:)

I do sort of agree, though. The original G-club/Sub-division members haven't received much compared to new members, or fans who haven't even necessarily joined up. I think the exclusive album is a nice touch, but obviously some sod is gonna leak it out to the world.

I've always assumed the album is only available free to SD members. I understand it, and I'm ok with it. But, I really hope there is a way for non-members to get the album, even if it costs.

Jupp, or release it in some other way. I mean, if it's given away somwhow on the internet, somehow it will get published anyway. I think it doesn't make much sense to just give it away to Sub-Divisioners xD

To the Sub Div people...

for those of you with a sub membership who keep on saying, "I hope this is only available to us!" well, that's silly for a few reasons:

1) If it's a digital release EVERYONE will get it. These things get leaked and it's only a matter of time.

2) This would be a great oppurtunity for some much needed attention for Gorillaz if it were free to everyone. The free music will entice people and, IMO even re-introduce Plastic Beach to those who are not aware that it even exists. Kinda like, "What? It says here that Gorillaz are giving an entire album for free! I'm gonna give it a go. (*listens to it and falls in love*) OMG! This is their 4th album? I hafta listen to the 3rd!"

3) Well, this is kinda a part B to reason one, but wouldn't you Subbies want something tangible? I would actually be mad if this is what I would get as the "extra cool stuff". It would be a jib.

Damon said that it would be free because it didn't cost him anything to make. I feel that if non-members had to pay for it, that'd sort of conflict with what he wants, no?

I don't see what everyone is so upset about... I think it's fabulously nice of them to give out the album for free to Sub Division members!

Besides, even if the other fans need to pay for it, they clearly need the money! Especially if EMI is being a twat about Rhinestone Eyes.

Hell, if I wasn't already a Sun Divisioner, I'd buy the album for the sake of supporting my favorite band!
